I teach through a cultural lens focusing on storytelling traditions of African, Irish, Native, and African-American people to create new forms that incorporate current performance/spoken word styles. Speculative fiction, Afro-Futurism, and creative non-fiction forms engage high school learners.
I present poetry forms from haiku to hip hop using mentor texts from ancient writers through the Native-American, Chicano, and Harlem Renaissance and positive local artists. I focus on how forms originate, evolve and adopted across cultures and globally. |
